What is a High Wind Warning?

A high wind warning means sustained winds of 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or higher are expected or occurring. These winds can cause tree damage, power outages, and make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. When a warning is issued for your area, take immediate action to protect yourself and secure loose objects.

How To Use

  • • Toggle between radar and wind risk layers
  • • Adjust opacity for better visibility
  • • Play/pause radar animation to track storm movement
  • • Click on storm markers to see movement speed

Why It Matters

Combining high wind warnings with radar helps you visualize active threats and better understand storm movement in your area.

Recent Expired Warnings

Shows high wind warnings from the past 48 hours to analyze recent patterns.

How To Use

  • • Review past warning polygons to see affected areas
  • • Compare with current conditions using the map style selector
  • • Click on any warning to view detailed information
  • • Use radar overlay to see how storms tracked

Why It Matters

Historical data helps identify patterns and verifies whether areas that received warnings were actually impacted.

High Wind Outlook Map

Displays high wind probability areas from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center.

Today & Tomorrow's Forecasts

We provide two detailed outlook maps: today's forecast showing immediate risk areas, and tomorrow's forecast to help you plan ahead. Both maps use official Storm Prediction Center data to show where damaging winds are most likely to develop.

How To Use

  • • Toggle between map styles to see different perspectives
  • • Zoom in and out to see detailed risk areas
  • • Click on any area to see more information
  • • Use the legend to understand risk levels

Why It Matters

Understanding these risk areas helps you prepare for severe weather and stay safe.

Map Controls Explained

1

Radar Controls

Our radar layer shows precipitation intensity from light rain (blue) to intense storms (red/purple).

  • • Animation controls let you play through the last hour of radar to track storm development and movement direction
  • • Opacity control helps blend radar with other map features for optimal visualization
2

Wind Risk Controls

The risk layer displays official Storm Prediction Center severe weather probability zones for the current day.

  • • Higher percentages (darker colors) indicate greater severe weather probability including damaging winds for that area
  • • Overlay both radar and risk layers to see if storms are developing in high-probability areas

Our Data Sources

High Wind Warn combines multiple official data sources to provide comprehensive high wind monitoring:

National Weather Service Warnings

Official high wind warning polygons with precise geographic boundaries and storm motion data

RainViewer Radar

High-resolution radar imagery showing precipitation intensity and storm cells

Storm Prediction Center

Daily high wind probability forecasts showing risk levels across the country

Mapbox Visualization

Professional mapping platform for interactive visualization and geographic analysis

Data is automatically refreshed every 30-60 seconds for warnings (more frequently when active warnings exist) and every 5 minutes for radar imagery to ensure you have the most current information available.

High Wind Safety Tips

  • • Secure loose outdoor objects such as patio furniture, grills, and decorations
  • • Avoid driving high-profile vehicles like trucks, RVs, and motorcycles
  • • Stay away from downed power lines and report them to authorities
  • • Trim tree branches away from your home and power lines before storms
  • • Monitor our live maps and local weather alerts during severe weather events
